Millstreet International Horse Trials

We set off on Tuesday evening on our mammoth trip to Ireland with 5 horses - I've been over many times for Tatts (which seems like a long way), but Millstreet really is that one bit further! About 16 hours later we arrived...

We knew taking 5 horses would be busy but we definitely under estimated quite how busy we'd be - not sure we ate dinner before 9 p.m. on any night!

QUICK GUY - CIC* for 6 year old horses; 6th after dressage, a little bit spooky SJ in a big arena and a fantastic clear XC just adding 0.4 of a penalty.

GUUS DHI - not a perfect test but a clear SJ, and unfortunately he found the testing XC a little too tough in the CIC**

BALIUS 7 - smashed his personal best dressage for a 30.8 and then followed this up by a foot perfect clear inside the time on the XC on Saturday. He flew (literally!) through both trot ups, absolutely loving everyone watching him and then just rolled an unfortunate pole on Sunday where he went a little spooky, to finish a credible 8th.

TOP BIATS - an absolute fantastic start, not sure there's a single horse I'd rather go into a dressage arena on. His first 3* and he scored 26.0 and was lying 7th before the jumping phases in a HUGE section. Unfortunately, similar to Guus, Top showed his greeness on the XC. All the courses were definite stepping up tracks, technical and big, meaning that the horses didn't have many let up fences, particularly in the 3* which encompassed 4 water complexes, and unfortunately at the last of these, only a few fences from home, Top decided enough was enough for that day. He will, however, have learnt masses, as will all the horses and has showed he definitely is a 3* horse.

Huge thanks to everyone at Millstreet for running such a super event, probably the best XC courses I’ve ever ridden round at all the different levels - definitely the best presented, their attention for detail was on another level!
